Us Irish are more accustomed to pots of gold but I'm sure Conor J O’Brien (aka Villagers) won't mind a bit of mercury, in the shape of The Mercury Prize.
Villagers', fronted by Conor J O'Brien, nominated album 'Becoming a Jackal' has wowed critics and music lovers for it's incredibly personal lyrics and it's dark and intense mood. And yes I love it. It's these qualities that keep me listening alongside the folksy simplicity of the album, that strikes a chord with me.
'Becoming a Jackal', the first single from the album, is a dreamy, wonderful and amazing track that comes with a slightly disturbing yet hauntingly beautiful video (watch out for the dancing pigs). It's not the most recent track from them but for me, it's always been one of my favourites.
I'm delighted that Villagers has attracted the attention of the Mercury Prize panel and I wish them the best of luck. And with their odds at the bookies jumping from 25/1 to 10/1, we might have an Irish winner on our hands. Place your bets. . . NOW!
Let me know what you think of the video and track.
